I Too, Sing America - Langston Hughes
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow, I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.
Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--
I, too, am America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow, I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.
Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--
I, too, am America.
Explanation:
The theme of this poem is courage. In this poem Langston Hughes talks about being brave and standing up. It might take some time to gather up the courage, but you will get the courage.I think a poetic device in this poem was the symbol of singing. In the first line, "I, too, sing America" I believe the symbol of singing America means that, you sing the American national anthem, thus you are an American.
